Although we are learning more and more about mental health, there is still a stigma attached to talking about bipolar disorder. Stigma often stems from a lack of understanding of mental illness, leading to harmful assumptions and stereotypes.

To recognise World Bipolar Day on the 30th March 2024, we want to eliminate the stigma associated with bipolar disorder by sharing facts about what it is, how common it is, and the support available.

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a serious illness characterised by mood swings and changes in energy levels.

The mood swings of someone with bipolar are more intense and prolonged than the typical ups and downs of everyday life.

People with bipolar disorder can experience severe changes in energy, sleep, thinking, and behaviour due to their condition. For more information about the characteristics of bipolar disorder check out the AWARE Factsheet by clicking here.

How many people have bipolar disorder in the UK?

There is an idea that bipolar disorder is rare, but it's not!

According to Bipolar UK, in the UK, 1.3 million people have bipolar. That is 1 in 50 people.

Who has bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder affects people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

Some people you might recognise who have bipolar include Mariah Carey, Stephen Fry and Selena Gomez.

What help is available for bipolar disorder?

Medication is the main treatment for bipolar disorder as it can help to control the mood swings.

Talking therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) can help you identify early warning signs and symptoms, and develop coping strategies.

At AWARE, we believe that talking to others who know how you feel, is an important step in your journey to recovery. We have a network of peer-led support groups across Northern Ireland welcoming people living with depression, bipolar and anxiety, as well as their family members or carers.
