The AWARE Mood Walk is coming up on Friday 8 September 2017 at 6pm and the depression charity is encouraging local people to help mark World Suicide Prevention Day by registering for this Mood Walk.

The AWARE Mood Walk is a great opportunity to bring together as many people as possible in the City, particularly those who have been affected by suicide or depression. Unfortunately, we have seen a lot of tragedies recently so this is an opportunity to get everyone together to stamp out the stigma attached to mental health and show your support for anyone that is suffering.

The AWARE Mood Walk is a fun-filled event for all the family to enjoy. As in previous years, participants can choose between a 5k or 10k walk. The evening will begin with entertainment from local artist Ruth McPhillips and will be followed up with a short motivating warm up to lift our moods and ensure we are both physically and mentally prepared for the Mood Walk. After the all-important exercise, participants will be brought back to the Foyle Arena for more entertainment, this time from local artist Rebecca Mulhern. There will also be children’s entertainment, a BBQ and much more.

Local man Ronan McCay is part of the AWARE Fundraising Group who are organising the walk. Ronan said,

“The Mood Walk will be a great event and I am really looking forward to it. I would urge anyone that is considering participating in the Mood Walk to sign up on the AWARE website as soon as possible. All registered participants will receive the new AWARE Mood Walk t-shirt as well as an AWARE Fundraising pack.

“Depression can affect anyone at any stage in their life, and unfortunately there is still a massive stigma attached to the illness. Support from the local community would help to tackle that stigma, so I would encourage walkers or runners of all ages and capabilities to sign up and participate in the AWARE Mood Walk. AWARE has just opened a third support group in the City this week so we really are a charity at the heart of Derry and we need your support.

“The AWARE Mood Walk is a sponsored walk so we are encouraging people to fundraise as much money as they can for doing the walk. All money raised is put directly back into the services AWARE provide in educating and supporting people with depression. If one person raised £45, this would help AWARE put three young people through their mental health awareness programme, ‘Mood Matters for Young People.”
