Mental Health Charity AWARE (formerly Aware Defeat Depression) is hosting, ‘Singing Star North West’ a singing competition for young people from schools across Derry on Friday 26th February 2015 at the beautiful Guildhall. Applications are still open and any young person with a keen interest in singing is encouraged to come forward to apply for a place.

Participants will be singing in front of a live audience along with guest judges and a host. There will be prizes for the best singers, with the top being a half day in a leading recording studio to record their winning song. The winner will then be presented with a CD.

The finalists will also sing for a public vote prize. Participants will seek votes from members of the public at a cost of £1 per vote. The three people that raise the most money will then get special prizes.

Those applying to participate must be from the Derry area and be aged between 12-18 years. All singing styles are welcome. So whether pop is your thing, rap is what you do or you’re an opera enthusiast; AWARE want to hear from you. The closing date for entries is Friday 15th January 2016.

Helping to organise Singing Star is former Derry City footballer and AWARE supporter, Felix Healy. Felix said,

“This is a fantastic chance to sing in Derry’s Guildhall and it also gives young people the opportunity to perform in front of family and friends in a beautiful setting and really show off their vocal talents and skills.

“As a musician myself, I understand the important role that music plays and how beneficial it can be for a person’s mental wellbeing. Being able to sing while supporting the work of AWARE will be very rewarding and I would highly advise those that are thinking about doing it, to apply now.

“All proceeds from the event will go to AWARE’s services and education programmes including the Mood Matters programme which is delivered in post-primary school across Northern Ireland.”

Also supporting the event is the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Elisha McCallion.

“I am delighted to be supporting this event organised by AWARE with the help of Felix. This is a great opportunity to bring together young people and also try to breakdown the stigma attached to mental illness.

“I would encourage everyone from across Derry to come along and show your support for a great local charity on 26 February 2016, I know I am looking forward to it!”
