Celebrating 25 years of AWARE

This year, we're celebrating 25 years of AWARE! Our story began in 1996 in Derry/Londonderry when a small group of people came together with a shared vision to improve services for people with depression and bipolar disorder in Northern Ireland. Since then, we've grown into one of the leading mental health charities in Northern Ireland, supporting and educating people on the importance of positive mental health.

At AWARE, we employ people with personal experience of mental ill-health at all levels in the organisation so that the people who use our services, have a say in how they are developed. As we celebrate our anniversary and reflect on the past 25 years, we’d like to invite you to meet the people involved in making AWARE what it is today.

We’re launching a social media video campaign next week on Mental Health Awareness Week to allow you to meet some of our staff and service users to find out about AWARE’s impact and why it is important that we stay around for another 25 years and beyond!

We’re hoping that hearing these stories will encourage others who are experiencing mental ill-health to reach out to AWARE, make use of our services and begin their own journey to better mental health.

Connecting with Nature

Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week will take place from 10-16 May 2021. The theme this year is 'Nature'. Access to nature is crucial for our mental health and research has shown that getting outside in nature can have huge benefits for our wellbeing. Stay tuned to our social media channels next week as we’ll be sharing blogs and resources with top tips for connecting with nature. We also have some fantastic fundraising challenges to get you outside enjoying nature as well as some free mindfulness sessions to help you become more aware of the beautiful nature around you!

Some activities you can get involved in during the week include -

The ‘AWARE 25 Challenge’

To celebrate our 25 years, and to help us ensure that we are here for another 25, we are inviting you to take part in the ’AWARE 25 Challenge’! The ‘AWARE 25 Challenge’ is any individual or group fundraising challenge in support of AWARE that incorporates the number 25. It could relate to the number of participants, minutes, repetitions, distance and feel free to add some zeros to up the challenge! What you do is up to you!

We have some examples for you. You could:

Run/Walk 5k a day for 25 days

Run 2.5 miles every day for 25 days

Practice 25 minutes of mindfulness

Or make up your own…the choice is yours!

Free Mindfulness Sessions!

AWARE Board Member Helen McDonnell of Indigo Life Coaching is offering online Mindfulness sessions next week which are open to everyone! The sessions will run over Zoom every day from Monday 10th May - Friday 14th May. There will be a session at 10am and one at 7pm.

  • These Mindfulness sessions are suitable for beginners and offer an introduction to the practice of Mindfulness.
  • There is a theme each day and people are encouraged to tune in to as many sessions as possible.
  • It's all about taking practical action to support good mental health!
  • Mindfulness is all about practice and these sessions allow people to try this in a supported environment to kick start their practice.

Living Life to the Full – Online Life Skills Programmes (Zoom)

We’re delighted to be able to offer a range of Living Life to the Full programmes online! The Living life to the Full programme will be delivered via zoom over 6 sessions lasting approx. 2hrs each.

This is a programme that can make a big difference to your life. It can help you manage your feelings when you are stressed, worried or depressed and learn simple practical skills to help you cope with life’s challenges. It looks more closely at the ways in which mental health can be impacted by life events and unhelpful thinking styles which may also then affect our physical health and overall enjoyment of life. Mood Matters for Adults – Online Mental Health Awareness Sessions (Zoom)

We have some free online Mood Matters courses available throughout May & June! The Mood Matters for Adults course is 2 hours long and is suitable for anyone (over 18) who would like to learn more about minding their mood. It can also help to manage feelings of stress & anxiety.
