We are delighted to have been highly commended at the DANI Awards (Digital Arts Northern Ireland) which took place in St Columb’s Hall on Friday 19 September 2014.

The award in the ‘Not for Profit’ category was for our hard work with the ‘I Am Depression Aware’ online blog launched in March 2014 encouraging people to share their experience of depression with others to help tackle stigma and promote recovery methods.

People from across the country have contributed to the blog and have each described their own journey of depression. Some bloggers have written about postnatal depression whilst others have talked about where they feel their depression stemmed from and explores the impact it has had on their weight, health and emotional well-being.

Siobhan Doherty, Chief Executive of Aware Defeat Depression said,

“We were delighted to have been shortlisted for the award for our blog which has been very successful so far. The blog is still very much in its infancy and I am very proud at the positive effect it has already had.

“Picking up the highly commended award is a credit to the hard work we do in Aware Defeat Depression and to the people who have contributed to the blog so far. Without the help of our dedicated and caring volunteers this would not have been possible, so this award is dedicated to all of these people.

“I would encourage anyone with depression, recovering from the illness or those that care for people with depression to have a look at the blog which can be found at www.iamdepressionaware.com and to submit a piece of writing, poetry or perhaps even a piece of music. Together we can tackle the stigma which is attached to depression today and encourage more people to speak openly about how it has effected them, in order to encourage others to do the same.”
