More than 100 brave fundraisers made a splash in the chilly waters of Newcastle Beach to raise money and awareness for AWARE - the national depression charity for Northern Ireland.

On Monday 2 January 2017, 125 people participated in the ‘AWARE New Year Splash’ and shook off the last of the festive excesses by taking the freezing plunge into the Irish Sea. An amazing £8000 was raised from sponsorship money with more money coming in. Well done everyone!

After the splash, the freezing swimmers warmed up with a well-earned complimentary cup of hot chocolate and shortbread in the iconic Slieve Donard Resort and Spa.

The first 50 lucky participants were treated to a free spa pass for two at the Spa at The Culloden Estate and Spa or The Slieve Donard.

Teresa Sloan, Director of Fundraising and Communications at AWARE said,

“We were overwhelmed by the response to our New Year Splash and we are grateful to those who braved the elements to come out and support us.

“Those taking part appeared to enjoy it, but I’d say were glad to get into the cosy surroundings of the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa after the event. It’s a great start to AWARE’s 21st anniversary year and we look forward to more successful events this year.”

General Manager of the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, Stephen Meldrum said,

"The Slieve Donard Resort & Spa are delighted to support this wonderful charity. AWARE do a wonderful job, and it is really encouraging that the New Year Splash will provide much needed support to so many young people across Northern Ireland. Well done to all who braved the elements."
