AWARE host successful “Public Talk” in Craigavon
We are delighted at how successful the recent public talk in Craigavon was. The event entitled, “Let’s Talk about it… A conversation on depression” was held in The Craigavon Civic & Conference Centre, Craigavon on Wednesday 28th of October and was well attended by members of the local community, Sam Gardiner MLA and Cllr. Darryn Causby, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council called in to offer his support.
AWARE are holding a series of public talks throughout Northern Ireland. The aim of the public talks is to reach out to local communities to ensure that people are familiar with the services AWARE provide in the local area and to also breakdown the stigma attached to depression.
Speaking at the event was, Dr Lauren Megahey a Psychiatry Registrar from Southern Health and Social Care Trust. Dr Megahey said,
“Events like this are really important, to spread the awareness of depression, share some information about depression, but most importantly, to enable people to know they are not alone. “It is really important to seek help if you are feeling unwell. Realising there is a problem is the first step. There are lots of services out there that offer support - please don't suffer alone.”
Anne Cunningham from CAUSE spoke about discovery through caring for people with depression. Anne said,
“It was wonderful to see an event that included people with depression, carers and members of the medical profession. These three aspects represent the triangle of care which is vital in recovery and wellbeing. The sharing of stories at this event was very powerful and the range of information available was excellent.”
Siobhan Doherty, Chief Executive of AWARE said,
“The response from the local people has been fantastic. We currently operate a support group fortnightly in Craigavon on a Thursday evening at 7.30 in the Brownlow Hub. Our next Craigavon support group will take place at on the 5th November. Anyone affected by depression is welcome. We hope that following the success of this public talk people will attend.”Tags: Armagh | AWAREness | Craigavon | Depression | Public Talks
