Basketball Ireland is rolling out ‘Mind Your Mental Health Week’, in association with charity partners Jigsaw and AWARE. It begins next Monday with the launch of Jigsaw’s ‘One Good Coach’, an online training course for people involved in the game to improve awareness of mental health.

On Tuesday at 8pm there will be an ‘Intro to Mindfulness’ webinar with AWARE’s Anne Costello, which members must register for by emailing accreditation@basketballireland.ie by 5pm on Tuesday, 26th January. During the week Basketball Ireland will also be posting mindfulness exercises from AWARE on their social pages.

Wednesday will see a ‘One Good Coach’ webinar at 8pm, with Jigsaw representative Rebecca Murphy, to expand on the lessons learned from the course. Members must sign up via accreditation@basketballireland.ie by 5pm on Wednesday.

Staying fit is crucial to both physical and mental health and on Thursday Basketball Ireland will have a special ‘Get Off The Couch’ programme with Ireland Under 18 head coach and Jigsaw partnership ambassador, Paul Kelleher. It’s to help basketball players of all levels stay in shape.

Throughout the week Jigsaw and AWARE partnership ambassadors will be showing off skills for you to practice while at home during lockdown, to keep those basketball skills honed. They want people to submit their skills videos on the Basketball Ireland Twitter page or the Basketball Ireland Instagram using the hashtag #BISkillsComp, with prizes on offer for the best ones submitted.

Basketball Ireland is helping Jigsaw and AWARE to fundraise and all week you can donate via our iDonate page. Please donate what you can, it doesn’t matter whether it’s 50c/50p or €10/£10. Basketball Ireland will be picking 10 donators at random, who will each receive a basketball as thanks.

Basketball Ireland chairman, Paul McDevitt, said: “2020 was a trying year and the start of 2021 has been so too, looking after our mental health has never been as important, so we’re delighted to be working with our charity partners to help people maintain their mental health. Our ‘One Good Coach’ course, which has been tailored to Basketball Ireland, is a really strong learning tool and will be of huge benefit to the basketball community as a whole.
